Apophatic Theology

About this video

Runtime: 20 mins

Susannah Ticciati discusses Apophatic theology, this is the recognition that language fails to fully describe God. It is not simply a theology of negation but goes beyond affirmations and denials. Apophatic theology is found in both Eastern and Western traditions, with figures like Gregory of Nyssa and Augustine exemplifying it. Pseudo-Dionysius, a key influence, uses language to point to the failure of language itself. This theology highlights God's transcendence and goes beyond oppositions between God and creation. Two important doctrines, creation ex nihilo and divine simplicity, contribute to the understanding of God's incomprehensibility and beyondness. Language fails to capture God's essence, and apophatic theology embraces this limitation.
