Evangelicals and Animals

About this video

Runtime: 11 mins

Philip Sampson Focae discusses evangelical attitudes towards animals. In 1885, CH Spurgeon, a prominent Baptist preacher, advocated for animal welfare, aligning with a longstanding Christian tradition. Spurgeon's views on cruelty were ahead of his time, extending beyond his Victorian contemporaries. Early evangelicals like John Calvin and Puritans emphasized compassion for animals, as did figures like John Wesley and Augustus Toplady. Even William Wilberforce, known for his anti-slavery campaign, helped found the SPCA. However, the 20th century saw a decline in Christian concern for animal suffering, with evangelical doctrines of human dominion and redemption contributing to indifference. Some modern evangelicals, like Andrew Linzey, are rediscovering this heritage, aiming to restore Christian compassion towards animals.
