About this video

Runtime: 9 mins

Stephen Travis discusses Herod the Great. Herod the Great ruled the Holy Land from 37 BC to 4 BC and was known for his ambitious building projects. To secure his legacy, he rebuilt the temple in Jerusalem on a grand scale and constructed numerous other structures including palaces, synagogues, aqueducts, and fortresses. His notable projects include the desert fortress of Masada, the Herodium near Bethlehem, and the city of Caesarea with its Roman-style harbour, theatre, and palace. Herod’s palace in Jerusalem featured grand defensive towers. His most remarkable achievement was the reconstruction of the temple in Jerusalem, which was later destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD.
