Plato and Theology

By Andrew Davison in February 2014

About this video

Runtime: 31 mins

Andrew Davison discusses the influence of the philosopher Plato on Christian thought and what Christian theologians have made of Plato's ideas. Plato's influence on Christian thought centres on his theory of Forms, which posits a transcendent reality behind the material world. Christians adapted this idea to explain a divine origin for the world's qualities, viewing existence as a participation in God's perfect being. Augustine of Hippo, deeply influenced by Neoplatonism, caused him to reject dualism and see evil as a privation of good. Neoplatonism also shaped Augustine's understanding of divine grace and the immaterial nature of God.
