Sepphoris, Tiberias and Caesarea

About this video

Runtime: 5 mins

Stephen Travis discusses the important places Sepphoris, Tiberias, and Caesarea during New Testament times. During Jesus' Galilean ministry, two key cities were significant: Tiberias, developed by Herod Antipas as a splendid Hellenistic city by the lake, and Sepphoris, initially chosen as the capital before Antipas relocated to Tiberias 20 years later. Despite their proximity, the gospels make no mention of Jesus visiting these cities, prompting speculation about deliberate avoidance due to their Hellenistic culture and distractions from his ministry focus. Another notable site was Caesarea Philippi, where Jesus posed crucial questions to his disciples amidst a multi-religious context, near the cave that once marked the source of the Jordan River.
