About this video
Runtime: 26 minsPaula Gooder introduces the Gospel of John. John's Gospel has historically had a challenging relationship in Christian tradition due to its association with Valentinian Gnostics, who emphasized secret knowledge and viewed God as a demiurge. This connection delayed its acceptance into the canon. Despite containing beloved stories like the wedding at Cana, John's Gospel is used less prominently than the synoptic Gospels in church liturgies, often supplementing them. The Gospel's structure, filled with discourses, makes it challenging to read. Its authorship is attributed traditionally to John the Apostle, but scholars debate this due to stylistic differences with other Johannine writings and the mysterious "Beloved Disciple" figure.
