About this video
Runtime: 30 minsGaven Kerr discusses Aquinas' metaphysics of creation. He discusses Aquinas' argument that the extrinsic principle must be pure existence itself, a being whose essence is its existence, reasoning that if existence were derived from something else, an infinite regress would result. Therefore, there must be a necessary being, pure existence, from which all contingent beings derive their existence. This necessary being, identified as God, is the ultimate cause of all existence and the source of the metaphysics of creation. He shows that Aquinas' argumentation establishes a foundation for understanding creatures as effects of God and elucidating the metaphysical relationship between Creator and creation.
