About this video

Runtime: 20 mins

Morwenna Ludlow discusses the Cappadocian fathers and their influence on the council of Nicaea where the divinity of Christ was discussed. In 325 CE, the Council of Nicaea declared that the Son was of the same substance as the Father. Around 327 CE, Macrina was born in Pontus, modern-day Turkey, to a wealthy Christian family. She later persuaded her widowed mother to turn their estate into a monastery. Her brothers, Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nyssa, were key theologians. The Cappadocians, including their friend Gregory of Nazianzus, developed deep theological ideas about the Trinity, heavily debating concepts like the relationship between the Father and the Son, and emphasizing the communal basis of knowledge over individual rationalism.
